"I Can Do It too" Special Needs Program

A Sensory/Motor/Gymnastics program for children of all ages with any minimal to severe physical, mental, emotional, social, language, and/or sensory challenges including:

  • Developmental Delay
  • Attention Deficit
  • Autism
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Visual Auditory/Speech Deficits
  • Sensory
  • Emotional/Behavioral/Social
  • Hypo/Hyperactivity
  • Coordination
  • Fear of Movement

This program was founded and developed in September 1996 at Rebounders Gymnastics by Heidi Soerensen, an Occupational Therapist.  The program was designed to provide the opportunity for children with special needs to participate in a motor program as an affordable alternative to needed therapies, in addition to therapies, andor as a recreational activity.  The program combines sensory stimulation, gross motor activities, and gymnastics to facilitate learning and growth in all aspects of human functioning.  Furthermore, it offers students the opportunity to be integrated in a safe and fun environment with non-challenged children.

Approach--The "I Can Do It Too" Program emphasizes sensory / vestibular stimulation through:

  • Swinging
  • Rolling
  • Jumping and more using Suspension equipment (net, tire, trapeze, helicopter, rings, bolsters)

Goals -- address physical, social, cognitive and emotional factors.

Physical

Increase:

  • Gross Motor Skills
  • Postural Control
  • Balance
  • Coordination
  • Strength
  • Flexibility
  • Stamina

Social

Increase:

  • Compliance with group activities
  • Appropriate Social Interaction
  • Comfort level in groups
  • Integrate into group settings as appropriate

Cognitive

Increase:

  • Attention / Focus
  • Ability to follow directions
  • Motor-Planning Skills
  • Problem Solving

Emotional

Increase:

  • Self confidence and movement enjoyment
  • Frustration Tolerance

CLASS OPTIONS

Individual Classes--Teacher works one-on-one with child individually.  This class is scheduled on an individual basis .

Integrational Classes--Child participated in an integration lesson within a refular Rebounders class.

Small Groups (with Integration)--Teacher works with child ina small group of 2-4 children.  Length of class time depends upon age and level children in the group.
